European Heritage Days: Cultural heritage under threat beneath the waves

The pile-dwelling sites in Lake Zug are under threat. The ATP archaeological diving group will explain why at Heritage Day from 2 pm at the museum, offering a glimpse into the underwater world of times gone by.

Endangered underwater cultural heritage
Many Neolithic and Bronze Age pile-dwelling sites in Lake Zug are under threat. Members of the ATP diving group (Archäologische Tauchprospektionen Zug) will explain the dangers facing these underwater archaeological finds at the museum from 2 pm. They will also explain how underwater archaeology works, provide an insight into the fascinating underwater world of bygone eras, and reveal the mystery behind the mysterious stone mounds on the lake bed.

The hands-on programme for families begins as early as 10.00 am. You can build pile-dwelling houses, search for treasures with an underwater metal detector, and piece together ceramic vessels.

The Museum of Prehistory will be open continuously from 10 am to 5 pm on 13 September. The hands-on activities will also be available during this time. The ATP archaeological diving group will be on site from 2 pm to 5 pm.

European Heritage Days
The event takes place as part of the European Heritage Days, which in 2026 are themed ‘At Risk?’. Across Switzerland, numerous other attractive events will be taking place over the weekend of 12–13 September, focusing on cultural heritage at risk.
